Interview with U-Pick Strawberries in Carlsbad


1. What is your name and your role here at the (farmers market, CSA, community garden)? Norman. I make sure people know what’s going on here and participate there and here.

2. Why do you choose to shop here/garden here/support this CSA?

Because of the pesticide issues going on at other places and this benefit the environment.

3. When did you first start coming here
I started coming here a couple years now.

4. Do you garden at home? Why or why not?
No I don’t, because I don’t have the time and the availability that we have here.

5. What would be your advice to get others to do what you do?
Try the Strawberries and find the nearest farmers market to you and enjoy what you’re doing and be patient success is not always immediate.

6. Why do you think you’re so successful?
Because we make our best effort for everything to run smoothly and we have a lot of people doing what there suppose to and that enjoy it.

7. Do you think you’re doing the right thing?
Yes, it’s what most people should do instead of buying them from pesticides and things that harm the environment and could help out a lot.




Reflection:



1. What struck you about the location you visited? Was it what you expected, or very different?
A little different, it was bigger than what I thought it would be and didn’t think it could have been as successful as it is. It was also very organized instead of being all crazy and chaotic.

2. Which items were cheaper than you expected? Which were more expensive?
Yeah, the strawberries, oranges, and watermelon were cheaper and were better tasting with a fresh taste (simple, fresh and delicious). Nothing was overly prized.


3. Do you think you will start going to a farmers market more often? Or using a community garden? Or supporting a CSA?
Yes the taste and all the benefits point out toward its better and cheaper and will try to encourage friends and family to go as well.

4. How do these locations fit into our essential questions of “Why Don’t People Live More Sustainably?” and “How Can I convince them to do so?”
Maybe, it’s more of the way people were born with and how the culture isn’t adapted to it. We just need to encourage it more and show people how and start by ourselves and our kids and raise them with that idea slowly spreading it around.

Why is the Garden there ?
-industrial products are not as good as the one we can plant and grow

Why here?
-there was free land and we had to put compost

How do you manage the garden?
-We put compost into the soil, try as many pesticides as we can and were constantly picking weeds.

How many people are involved?
-Ever senior for at least half a year

Summer time care?
-Timers and irrigation system means no water wasted

Would I make changes in the garden?
I would expand a bit and try to get more people invloved but i think theyr off to a good start.

Was the garden what i expected?
YES! it exeeded my expectations of what a garden would look like when we were walking there.

What does the garden mean to you?
To me it means people are trying to make a change and they are trying.

Food Inc. & My Ishmeal

The concept of how we are causing everything and we can't really do
anything immediate to counterattack this situation really strikes me
because as soon as I see how all of this is happening I want to do
something about it and stand up but I don't really know how approach
it. I agree on how if we continue living this way it's not gonna lead
us anywhere and we need to change it now before it evolves to much and
were even more stuck. My family agrees with me, but i saw in a sense
like they said well ok that's how it is we can't really do anything
about it and just seemed depressed about the situation.

School Daze & School Dave 2 Dialectic Journal

Quote: "Through Rachel, I became a student of your educational system. In effect, I went to school with her. Most of the adults in your society seem to have forgotten what went on when they were in school as small children. If, as adults, they were forced to see it all again through the eyes of their children, I think they'd be astounded and horrified."


Response:

What makes me think about this is that kids reflect a lot what they learn in school and what they are brought forward in their knowledge. Based on the actions and the expression towards school started changing, Ishmael also got to see what her educational system was like and how it never changed much. And it says that "I went to school with her." He didn’t really actually go to school with her but interpreted everything. Also I see how if I went to any of my grade levels before I would be pretty devastated and wouldn’t really want to repeat the experience. Adults should remember what it was like to go to school so they can help out with what’s going on in school and not have to be so far off in their new vision of school from our vision of school

Time Travelers Reflcetion

Project Description: For this part of the project we painted in one of the pillars in the 9th grade commons. There are four pillars and they were about art and architecture, religion and society, science and technology, government. Everyone in our team painted in the pillar of what they wrote about in their research paper. For example, I wrote about the Minoan science and technology in my research paper. So I had to paint a picture representing the Minoan science and technology in the according pillar.

Process: First, I had to look at different pictures about Minoans and about things that related to Minoan Science and Technology. Then, I drew out what my picture would look like. Then, I had to get it approve by our teacher Charlotte in order to start painting. Then, I painted everything. At last, I wrote my name in the bottom.

Reflection: By painting this pillar I learned how to be able to show something with images or a drawings. For example, I showed Minoan science and technology by putting a battle ax. One challenge I encountered was trying to find how to represent science and technology because I couldn't think of anyway of representing for the painting. If I could paint my pillar again I would spend more time on it, because I rushed through it at the end. This will help me later when I have to get stuff done on time and do it well and when I have to manage my time so I don't have to rush things.

Humanities Goals

First Step: Get dividers for my binder and put work in my binder rather than in my backpack.

• Take notes on what's being giving out.

First Step: Write what is going on in my head as it happens.

• Increase my use of literary devices like focus, showing not telling, and sensory detail.

First Step: Look at my old work, my current work and others work and think about how I could improve by seeing examples.

Taco Sister

"There's one," I exclaimed at him as I passed through one of the open parking spaces. The only words I heard him say were, "Calm down already." Then I rushed him to get to the hospital which was a monument to me. Then, we found the door and rushed the counter. Then, my uncle asked the lady for my mom , and she said, "Fourth floor room number...” The rest faded out as I rushed the elevator for the hope of getting there on time. Then as my patience was coming to an end I saw the number of floor we were on increase. 1 , 2, 3, 4. Then, as the doors opened I tried pulling them open which caused more desperation in me. As I ran through the hall, I noticed that I was going the wrong way quickly, so I turned and ran the opposite way. I noticed there was a 2 way hallway at the end. A decision: left or right. I chose left. That made all the difference in the world. As I ran I started to notice the white painted walls with little baby decorations which seem really childish. Nurses were wearing gowns appealing to kids with purple, blue, green, and yellow all combined in weird but entertaining colors.

Suddenly, I saw my mom's room. I saw a pink curtain cover the door and I smiled as I impatiently waited for my uncle, I seemed he was a snail compared to the rate I was going. After what seemed an hour to me, he came quickly in about a minute and went inside and told me to wait. I then proceeded to look around. I saw the blank pink curtain that to me was a huge barrier between my sister and me, which I couldn't break. I started to notice the weird medicine smell there always is in the hospital. I noticed that the once seemingly wonderful chair I sat on was a bit uncomfortable and made with this blue plastic. Finally, they let me inside. I was happy. I looked inside looking for my sister. As I found her in this weird crib like stand, I walked over to her, and I saw the tiny little girl under this little light keeping her warm. She was wrapped in a pink blanket which made her look like a taco, which made me hungry. Then, I had just become a big brother and I will never forget that. EVER!!!

THE SOUND

Whats that.... That sounds like water drizzling peacefully down a stream. it sounds like peddles running and hitting all around moving around and dropiing into the water. Suddenly as you start to figure a pattern that was made you notice a soft roaring sound of waves appearing.

Fictional Super Hero

Iron Man :D

Why ???? Cause he's awesome.... He seems more realistic and credible than other superheroes and well theres allot of weapons science behind him. he uses a suit so its possible to create in the future and will be very cool.

Hes special to me and he inspires me to be a weapons specialist in the future to attempt his creation. and he is really cool and seems to be a nice person and a role model anybody would like to follow and you feel its realistic cause of all the science shown behind it :D
